The hum of recruiters and students interacting and networking together in the Atrium of Knight Hall and Bauer Hall was at a high pitch on September 10th and 16th at the annual Olin Meet the Firms events hosted by the Weston Career Center.

Across both days, more than 100 firms and over 1,400 students gathered on all three levels of the Atrium to discuss future opportunities. Dean Gupta summed up the event last night, “Knight and Bauer were buzzing this evening with energy and excitement.”

Robust Job Market for Business Majors. Poets & Quants for Undergrads, July 15, 2014. Weston Career Center’s Brad McLeod says the BSBA Class of 2014 has had great success on the job market with the number of students reporting jobs at graduation four to five percent higher than last year. According to a new report in Forbes, St. Louis is among the top five cities in the country gaining jobs in the financial services sector. The industry employs 7.9 million in the U.S. according to Forbes and cities from Arizona to Texas, Tennessee, and Missouri are “stealing jobs from Wall Street.”

The report based on recent and long-term employment trends calculates 87,100 financial services jobs in the St. Louis metropolitan region in 2013 with 1.7% growth over the previous year. Forbes is bullish on the future of financial jobs, “Places like St. Louis, where the industry has grown and approaches critical mass, seem to be in position to make a serious bid for higher-end jobs.”

The top five cities with gains in finance jobs are:

1. Phoenix-Mesa-Glendale, Arizona

2. San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas

3. Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, Texas

4. Nashville-Murfreesboro-Franklin, Tennessee

5. St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois

Rakestraw previously worked with Cultivation Capital, as a leader in the firm’s due diligence research.  His proven background in both entrepreneurial ventures and diligence research make him an incredible asset to the Cultivation team.

Prior to joining Cultivation, Ryan was a systems engineer with Northrop Grumman where he helped to design and implement military platforms ranging from undersea to space applications.  Ryan has a bachelor’s of science in electrical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a master’s of science in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins, and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. During his MBA, Ryan became deeply involved with the entrepreneurial community in St. Louis and helped numerous businesses craft strategies, attract capital, and execute plans.

He is active in the non-profit space where he co-founded Unite4Kids (unite4kids.com), an organization which supports children who have suffered from abuse or neglect. Ryan also sits on the board of Employment Connection St. Louis, an organization with the mission of assisting people with limited job opportunities to become self-sufficient.
