Moving trucks started arriving at the entrances to Knight Hall and Bauer Hall Monday morning, March 10, as the migration of faculty and staff from Simon Hall officially got underway. Computers were installed as other teams assembled office furniture and unpacked boxes.

When taking breaks from the job at hand, faculty and staff explored the five-story complex which still echoed with sounds of construction workers putting on the finishing touches to Knight Hall and Bauer Hall.

Classes begin in the new halls Monday, March 17!

The Weston Career Center’s new home is on the 2nd floor of Knight and Bauer Halls.  Come visit, find your advisor’s office, and check out the 14 hi-tech interview suites.

Students interested in finance and marketing were in New York for the annual Career Trek this month to meet with a variety of alumni and recruiters. The finance track met with representatives of: Goldman Sachs, RBC Capital Markets, HSBC, Oppenheimer, Cain Brothers, JP Morgan, Sagent Advisors, Elliot Management, AB InBev and Google.  The marketing track visited Geometry Global, Bloomingdale’s, Seiden Advertising, Google and National Artists Management Company.

This year, more than 35 students participated onOlin_NY_trek1
the finance track and 15 students ventured to N.Y. on the marketing track.

Led by Mark Brostoff, Associate Dean and Director, Weston Career Center and Dorothy Kittner, Assistant Dean for Corporate Relations, along with members of the Undergraduate Program and Alumni/Development Offices, Olin was well represented in New York City from October 15th – 17th.

As part of the 2013 New York Career Trek, a structured event called “Roundtables”(a timed “speed dating model”) was added to allow more interaction between students and alumni. Hosted at the Harmonie Club on Thursday, October 17th, students on the finance track met with alumni from hedge funds, investment banks, capital and asset mangement firms.

On the marketing track, students had the opportunity to learn from alumni from consumer package goods, digital media and entertainment, and leisure and travel industries.  Everyone had a great time with lively conversation, networking, plus a spread of Asian specialties to provide nourishment for the 3.5 hour event.

As first year MBA students at Olin, my classmates and I are forging the relationships that will form the foundation for our professional networks. We are meeting each other, second years, professors, and professionals in the community.

Another exciting opportunity that we can take advantage of is the Industry Insider Mentor Program. In this program, students are matched with Olin Alumni mentors in order to complement the curriculum with industry exposure.

Second years who participated last year were assigned mentors who offered valuable insights. Niki McKinney, who is targeting brand management positions in CPG firms says of her mentor who works in marketing at Nestle Purina, “I absolutely loved getting to know my mentor last year. He was a great asset for me to get to know my target industry, job function, and local opportunities. We still keep in touch now that I am a 2nd year, and he has been instrumental in connecting me with folks at Purina and elsewhere. I’m excited to continue learning from his experiences throughout my professional career!”

Other second years developed relationships with alums in diverse geographies, industries, and functions, such as private equity or procurement in the energy industry. Anton Gimmel says his mentor helped him “cut through the opacity of breaking into private equity”.

Mihika Baruah, who worked with the Director of Procurement for a natural gas company, sets a great example of how the student drives the relationship through consistent, professional communication: ” I connected with my mentor before my summer internship and received some valuable advice from her.”

To apply, follow the link in Susan Evans’ email and send her a copy of your resume at susan.evans@wustl.edu.

Take advantage of this great opportunity by October 11, 2013!

Friends of Olin—affectionally known as F.O.O.—are a special group of people who volunteer every year to get involved with students and faculty and help create the exiting intersection of business and academia that we all enjoy at Olin.  More than 140 corporate friends, alumni, and students attended the 2013 Friends of Olin celebration on May 31, hosted by the Office of Corporate Relations.

For the third consecutive year, the Olin Business School community gathered to honor all those who generously give their time, energy, and experience to the school as mentors, classroom speakers, competition judges, and Advisory Board members.

Many of the companies that hire Olin students for internships and full-time positions, such as Edward Jones, Express Scripts, Monsanto, Rubin Brown, and Wells Fargo Advisors, were represented by executives at the event.

One of Olin’s dedicated corporate friends, John Beuerlein (MBA ’77), General Partner at Edward Jones, and student speaker, Brooke James (MBA ‘13), presented remarks during the ceremony.

Name:  Molly Sonderman

Role:  Global Outreach and Business Development Specialist, Employer Relations in Olin’s Weston Career Center.

I’ve been with the WCC for 7 months.

Before coming to the Olin Business School and the WCC, I worked for Deloitte Consulting in their Human Capital division.

I am responsible for global employer relations. I commonly work with international employers and try to create opportunities for our students interested in working abroad. I also partner with domestic employers in an effort to create opportunities for our international students who are interested in working in the United States.

Best piece of career advice I ever received from someone: Don’t be afraid to course correct. You have a responsibility to yourself to pursue something that makes you happy. You will be more creative and do a better job if you find fulfillment in your work.

Where you will find me in St. Louis for fun and recreation:  Exploring the city parks with my puppy and trying out new restaurants with my husband.
