While the students are away on spring break, Olin staff stay behind and keep the business school, well, open for business. The new Staff Committee decided it was time to bring a little R&R to their hard-working colleagues with a Potluck and Relaxation Event. It was the first-ever of its kind and featured therapy dogs, massages, relaxing music, coloring books, and time to share a meal with fellow staffers who gathered in the McGinnis classroom.

Not that anyone needed prodding, but the Committee did send out some convincing (and amusing) propaganda to encourage attendance:

Did you know?

Studies show people who spend time with pets “had greater self-esteem, tended to be less preoccupied, and were more physically fit”

The benefits of coloring for adults include:  Your brain experiences relief by entering a meditative state. Stress and anxiety levels have the potential to be lowered.

People who get massages report lower anxiety, headaches, and body pain

People who eat live longer than people who don’t eat?

Relief from the heatwave arrived at Olin today during the annual Ice Cream Social. Faculty, staff, and their adorable children of all ages gathered in the Knight Hall and Bauer Hall Atrium for a Cake Walk, balloon creations, and, of course, scoops of ice cream with a table of incredible toppings to choose from. Personally, I couldn’t decide between hot fudge and chocolate sauce, so I indulged in both with a spoonful of toffee crunch and marshmallows! What’s your favorite flavor at the Ice Cream Social?IMG_2199IMG_2195IMG_2196IMG_2193

Brian Harting, is the recipient of this year’s Christine Hatina Award, presented annually for outstanding and exemplary administrative service.  Brian provides administrative support to two full-time faculty, numerous adjunct faculty, and manages the reimbursement process for all Olin faculty members.

As you can imagine he’s always quite busy, but continues to offer great customer service with a big smile.  This may be why Brian has been nominated for the award by more than one faculty member every year since its inception.  I am also pleased to note that there were numerous nominations this year, representing every staff department.

Named for a former staff member and funded by the Olin faculty, this award is presented to the Olin non-management administrative staff member who exemplifies the attributes displayed by Christine Hatina in providing outstanding administrative service to the Olin Business School faculty.  Chris Hatina was a member of our Dean’s Office staff for many years.  Tragically, she passed away in 2012 at the age of 47.   Each year, faculty members nominate outstanding candidates and the winner is determined by committee.

Brian receives a plaque and a monetary award.  There will also be a reception held in his honor on Wednesday, April 27, 2015 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm in the Bauer Hall Faculty Seminar Room, BH 550.  All faculty and staff are invited to attend.  Snacks, cake, and soft drinks/coffee will be served.

Please join me in congratulating Brian on a job well-done!

Chris Presley, BSBA academic & student services advisor, is on his way to Seoul, South Korea as a participant in the Global Diversity Overseas Seminar Program (GDOS). He is the first participant chosen from Olin to participate in this unique program for staff members.

We caught Chris on the day before his departure and he told us about GDOS and his trip in the video above.

GDOS is a nine-month program designed to introduce Washington University staff members to interculturalism, diversity and social justice work in a global context. It encourages staff members to open their minds and take a few steps outside of their comfort zones.

For 2015, the GDOS Program will focus on diversity and social justice issues in South Korea. South Korea has a robust history, strong religious and cultural traditions, and is a major trading partner in Asia that has invested in manufacturing, technology and design.

During the 10-day tour of South Korea, Chris plans on meeting current students and Wash U. alumni. He will also meet faculty, staff, and students at Seoul National University and Yonsei University, two of our partner institutions in Seoul.

Safe travels, Chris. We look forward to hearing about your trip when you return!

This year, 11 other individuals were nominated for the award, which made the selection process difficult.
