The MBA Roundtable announced today that the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business was chosen as the 2015 winner of the MBA Roundtable Innovator Award. The MBA Roundtable Innovator Award was created to recognize and promote innovative initiatives in MBA education and to acknowledge the institutions that are driving change in the field.

This year’s award recognized the school’s Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs (TVL), which serves as a gateway to access the vast entrepreneurship resources available through the University of Texas at Austin and the local central Texas entrepreneur community.

The MBA Roundtable presented the award at the annual MBA Roundtable Curricular Innovation Symposium, hosted this year at the Olin Business School, University of Washington in St. Louis, on October 22 and 23, 2015. The Olin Business School was the inaugural recipient of the Innovator Award in 2011.

UT-Austin – Texas Venture Labs
Texas Venture Labs (TVL) is a cross-campus, interdisciplinary education and research initiative created within the McCombs School of Business to support entrepreneurship, innovation and company formation within the school and the regional business community.

“It’s a real honor to receive this award and the validation that comes with it for our efforts around innovation across our campus and in conjunction with the rich startup ecosystem in Austin” said Rob Adams, faculty founder and director of TVL. “We look forward to continuing to innovate as we grow the program and build McCombs’ entrepreneurial rankings.”

TVL provides a systematic process that involves students, faculty, and entrepreneurs through connected, interrelated programs featuring classroom and experiential education and mentoring; market and business plan development and validation; team-building and networking; and access to other business resources and funding.

“While several school have multi-disciplinary entrepreneurial programs, what sets UT-Austin apart from those programs is its success at arranging opportunities for students to present their ideas to potential investors,” notes Dr. Jay Christiansen-Szalanski, professor of management at the Tippie School of Business, University of Iowa, who served as an evaluator and selection judge.

Closing the Gap:  Cultivating Communication Competencies in the MBA

mba roundtableNumerous employer surveys cite “communications” as the most critical skill needed in new hires – and often business schools are criticized for insufficient development of these skills in MBAs.

The MBA Roundtable symposium presents research findings and engages participants through interactive formats to explore new techniques to create effective learning experiences and measure communication competencies. The renowned comedy company, Second City, will open the symposium with a highly interactive experience to demonstrate how improvisation can build skills for creativity, communication and collaboration.

“One of the major questions facing graduate business school directors today is how to deal with the growth of specialized masters programs (SMPs) over the past five to eight years,” says Joe Fox, associate dean and director of Olin’s MBA program. While adding specialized master degree programs such as Master of Supply Chain, Global Master of Finance, and Master of Consumer Analytics is a response to market demands, business schools must find curriculum and staff efficiencies in order to meet the needs of new programs.

Fox is currently the president of the MBA Roundtable, a global association of business schools whose mission is to advance graduate management education through MBA curricular and program innovation.

In the video (click above), Fox discusses results of a survey conducted by the MBA Roundtable  on questions related to curriculum and governance in light of the growth spurt in specialized master programs.

The purpose of the “Study on Shared Curriculum and Governance” was to better understand the extent to which MBA core courses are the same or different in other MBA and MS offerings within the business school portfolio and the level at which curricular decisions are made in the school.

The survey was conducted in Fall 2014 with 219 respondent business schools from North America, Europe and Asia.

At a moment like this, the mission and goals of the MBAR are even more critical and relevant. What a fortuitous time to be a member of the MBAR – and what an exciting time to be able to help steer the course for this valuable organization.”

Joe’s expansive 16 years of leadership at the Olin Business School includes managing the Full-Time MBA program, the Professional MBA program and the Specialized Masters Programs.  We congratulate him on this new endeavor and for the recognition he so greatly deserves for being a leader within MBA community at large.
