Two BSBA graduates will be honored for their skills in the classroom and in sports this month. Katie Chandler and J.J. Tomlin are recipients of the 2017 Outstanding Student Athlete Award. These two graduates have exhibited strong leadership ability and sportsman-like conduct in their respective sports of soccer and football.

Kathryn Lane Chandler

Katie, majored in marketing with a minor in psychology, and has been a leader on the Bears Women’s Soccer Team for four years. As captain, she led the team to the Division III National Championship for the first time in school history this year.

Katie, a forward, won the NCAA Championship “Most Outstanding Offensive Player”.

She started all 24 games in her final season and recorded a team-high 12 goals and four assists for 28 points. She was named UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week four times in her final season.

Katie concludes her college soccer career ranked second in school history in game-winning goals (16) and seventh in goals (37) and points (87).

Katie was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III All-America Team this year.

John James Tomlin    

J.J. majored in marketing with a minor in the business of sports. He is a three-time all-University Athletic Association and two-time all-Southern Athletic Association honoree, he concluded his career as the most decorated quarterback in school history with school records in completion percentages,  completions, passing attempts, passing yards, total offense, and TDs – 83, if you’re counting.

Off the field, J.J. is WashU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president, and also serves as vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has been active with the Special Olympics, food drives, shoe drives and various service projects in the area.

On Saturday, Nov. 7, alumni and friends of WashU joined the campus community for Founders Day, the annual commemoration of the university’s 1853 founding.

Highlighting this year’s banquet, held at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel, celebrated writer and biographer Walter Isaacson. The event also honored the recipients of the university’s Distinguished Alumni Awards and Distinguished Faculty Awards. In addition, three individuals received the Robert S. Brookings Award.

Members of the Olin community were well represented among the honorees.

Distinguished Faculty Awards

The Distinguished Faculty Awards recognize outstanding commitment to the intellectual and personal development of students. Recipients this year are:

Timothy J. Ley, MD (MD ’78), the Lewis T. and Rosalind B. Apple Chair in Oncology and professor of medicine and of genetics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis;

Todd Milbourn, PhD, the Hubert C. and Dorothy R. Moog Professor of Finance and senior associate dean of faculty and research at Olin Business School;

Kimberly Jade Norwood, JD, professor of law in the School of Law; and

William Peck, MD, the Alan A. and Edith L. Wolff Distinguished Professor of Medicine and director, Center for Health Policy in the School of Medicine.

Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize outstanding professional achievement, public service, exceptional service to Washington University, or all three. Recipients this year are:

Edward P. deZevallos (MBA ’67);

Curley M. Dossman Jr. (JD ’76), president, Georgia-Pacific Foundation;

Thomas Feichtinger (BS ’86), director, Maryville Technologies;

W. E. Moerner, PhD (BS, AB, BS ’75), the Harry S. Mosher Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University;

Richard Ritholz (BSBA ’84), senior portfolio manager at Elliott Management Corp.; and

Bernarda “Bernie” Lo Wong (MSW ’68), president and chief executive officer of the Chinese American Service League.

Robert S. Brookings Awards

Presented by the Board of Trustees, the Robert S. Brookings Award honors individuals for their extraordinary dedication and generosity to Washington University. Recipients this year are:

James and Elizabeth McDonnell; and

Joyce Wood (BSBA ’76, MBA ’77).

Robyn LeBoeuf, associate professor of marketing, has been named as one of the top 50 most productive authors published in the premier marketing journals over the past five years. The American Marketing Association publishes the annual “Author Productivity” list.

Prof. LeBoeuf joined the Olin faculty last fall. She previously taught at the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business Administration. Her research interests include judgment and decision making, behavioral decision making theory, rationality, and consumer behavior. Meet Prof. LeBoeuf in the video above.




The Graduate Diploma and Awards Ceremony took place on Friday, May 16. The Graduate keynote speaker was James V. O’Donnell, President and CEO, Bush-O’Donnell & Company, Inc. and Chairman and CEO, Exegy, Inc. Jim earned his Olin BSBA and MBA in 1974. The student speaker was Michael Saltzman, MBA ’14.

Awarded to the graduate students who have earned the highest academic achievement in their program.  This award was established by the Emerson Company to honor its distinguished chairman and now emeritus, Charles F. Knight, a great benefactor and champion of Olin Business School.

Hiram and Mary Neuwoehner Prize
Awarded by the faculty to the graduating Professional MBA student who has been the most substantive addition to the evening program by way of contributions in the classroom and excellence in writing papers and taking examinations. This award was established by Mary Neuwoehner in the 1990s to honor her husband, Hiram Neuwoehner, BSBA ’41, a St. Louis advertising executive and founder of Batz-Hodgson-Neuwoehner Inc.

Milford Bohm Prize in Marketing
Awarded to the graduating MBA student who, in the judgment of the faculty, exhibits the strongest academic achievement and the most potential in the field of marketing. This award was established in honor of Milford Bohm – founder, chairman, and CEO of CPI (formerly Rembrandt Studio) from 1942 to 1973 – by his wife, Lee Bohm, and their children, Mimi (MBA ’79), David (LA ’78/JD ’84), Rob (MBA ’90), and the late Vicki (EN ’84/SI ’85).

Paul Cuffe MBA Award for Outstanding Leadership
Awarded to a graduating African American MBA student for outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and involvement in Olin extracurricular activities. This award is named in honor of Paul Cuffe, who was one of the most financially successful black Americans at the end of the 18th century. A builder and maritime merchant in New England, Cuffe became a successful blockade runner during the Revolutionary War and an entrepreneur during the early years of American independence.

Awarded by the Dean to recognize MBA students who have rendered extraordinary service to Olin.

Hubert C. Moog Prize
Awarded to the graduating MBA student who, in the opinion of his or her fellow students, best exemplifies the qualities of character, leadership, and service and also enjoys the respect, admiration, and affection of his or her classmates. This award is named in honor of Hub Moog, who as chairman and president of Moog Automotive, transformed his family’s St. Louis-based business into a world-renowned corporation. He served on the Washington University board of trustees and the Olin Task Force in 1980 and 1981. He and his wife, Dorothy R. Moog, were strong supporters of Washington University.

Awarded to the graduating Master of Accounting student who, in the judgment of the faculty, exhibits the strongest academic achievement and the most potential in the field of accounting. This award is named in honor of Nicholas Dopuch, a tenured Olin accounting professor from 1983 to 2006 and now an Olin professor emeritus.

John Wayne Latchum Memorial Award
Recognizes the graduating MBA student who best exemplifies the qualities of integrity, loyalty to friends and country, courage, intelligence, and high standards of personal conduct as judged by the faculty. This award is named in memory of John Wayne Latchum, a business student who died in 1971 while he was a senior at Washington University. It is made possible through the generosity of his parents.

Vibha Athre Vemana
Joseph W. Towle Prize
Awarded to the graduating MBA student who, in the judgment of the faculty, exhibits the strongest academic achievement and the most potential in the area of organizational leadership. This award is named in honor of Joseph W. Towle, who was a tenured Olin management professor from 1954 to 1975 and a leader among faculty. Well known in his field, an author, and president of the Academy of Management, he established this prize to encourage excellence in the classroom.

Powell Niland Prize
Awarded to the graduating MBA student with the strongest academic achievement in the fields of operations and manufacturing management. This award is named in honor of Powell Niland, who was a tenured Olin operations and manufacturing management professor from 1957 to 1989 and an Olin professor emeritus from 1989 until 2009.
