Thank you for your generosity during the special PB&Joy food drive to help our neighbors in Ferguson and surrounding areas.  We donated 373 pounds of food collected in the four Olin bins!  Here are some other details about the University-wide campaign:

·        Our colleagues at Operation Food Search mentioned numerous times that Washington University was the first of their community partners to step up and offer to help following the incidents in Ferguson.  They are deeply grateful for our contributions and our desire to assist.

·        32 bins were placed across all University campuses

·        3830 pounds of food were donated

Operation Food Search was delighted with the prevalence of canned chicken & tuna, which is sorely needed.  This food has already gone out to the 8 partner agencies in/near Ferguson, and to St. Louis Crisis Nursery / Florissant which is going door to door in Camden Green.

·        $1270 was donated to Operation Food Search. A portion of this was used to cover freight to deliver 360,000 diapers to Ferguson and neighboring communities.

·        Operation Food Search calculates that our drive allowed 1,789 people to eat for a day.

We look forward to once again participating in the annual PB&Joy food drive in April 2015 and the friendly competition between Students and Faculty/Staff to win the title of biggest donor.

Warm regards,
Your PB&Joy Ambassadors

In continuing the university’s role as a welcoming place to discuss issues surrounding the events in Ferguson, Mo., the Office of the Provost in coordination with the Gephardt Institute for Public Service and the Office of Human Resources, are hosting a series of “Conversation Circles” on the Danforth Campus this week.

8:30 a.m. Danforth University Center (DUC) 233
Noon Anheuser-Busch Hall Wright Jury Room (School of Law)
4:30 p.m. Danforth University Center (DUC) 242

“The focus will be on the voices in the room, but this is just the beginning,” Smith said. “We are looking at having more conversations in every school and in every major space on the Danforth Campus in the future.”

Conversations are scheduled to last one hour and are open to all Danforth Campus faculty and staff. They will be led by faculty and staff members experienced in facilitating conversations surrounding diversity and inclusion. No registration is required; staff and faculty can just drop in.

“Faculty and staff members – some of whom live in the Ferguson area and have had direct experience – need a space to reflect about the images we’ve been seeing on television the last few weeks,” said Rochelle D. Smith, assistant provost and director of diversity, summer programs and community outreach for the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences. “This is an answer to that, a series of conversations – based on specific themes and topics – in smaller settings designed to get the university community to connect, support, share feelings with each other and talk about what’s next.”

On behalf of the Community Service Office and Operation Food Search, we invite all members of the Olin community to participate in a special PB&Joy campus wide canned food drive starting today and ending on September 3.  We are acutely aware that the economic impact of recent events in Ferguson will trickle down to dinner tables for months to come – impacting families who live, work, learn, shop, and receive services in Ferguson and neighboring communities.  The focus is on canned chicken and tuna but all non-perishable food items are welcome.

How to Donate:
1.     Bins are located in Knight Hall (outside 310), Graduate Student Lounge (Bauer Hall), Simon Hall flag hallway and the Student Business Center (2nd floor of Knight Center) for canned goods.
2.     Cash donations can be made online at http://fooddrive.wustl.edu
