The Forum under construction

If you’re a webcam junkie and keep tabs on the Olin construction site, you might have spotted the large oval hole that has formed inside the construction site of Knight Hall and Bauer Hall.

Don’t worry, it’s not a mistake!

It’s the future site of what the architects call the “heart” of the building ensemble. The oval opening on the third floor/campus level will serve several purposes:

  •   It will allow light to flood down to the lower two floors of the buildings and
  •   It will house the Forum, a space modeled on Greek-style amphitheaters

The Forum will be the place for big community events, presentations, classes, or just a great place to hang out with friends, eat lunch, study, check FB, or the Olin Blog. In other words, it’s a multi-purpose space on three levels located under the glass atrium.

Check out the live webcam from the Knight Center roof for the best view of the hole, umm, the Forum!  You can also get a sneak preview of what it will look like a year from this spring when it’s finished!

Steel beams in place in Knight & Bauer Hall

One of the things I most enjoy about my work at Tarlton is touring our construction sites.

I visited the Olin Business School expansion project Dec. 14. Being surrounded by the work in progress gave me a better feel for how grand this expansion will be once complete.

Lots of steel has been erected, with more to come.   Most of us know what a ‘2-by-4′ is, but I didn’t know how steel was measured. A piece of steel labeled ’30-by-132’ means it’s 30 inches tall and weighs 132 pounds per 1-foot length (thanks to  Tarlton Project Manager Cameron Denison for the lesson).

Do the math and you can see how several trusses now in place to support the atrium space each weigh a hefty 33,000 pounds.   Now that I’ve seen the massive framework for the atrium, I can’t wait to watch the glass roof go up in early 2013.
