Six Olin students helped propel the Bears to victory in a swim meet against the Univ. of Chicago this weekend. Bear Sports reports: St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 8, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams combined to win 19 events on their way to sweeping home dual meets against the University of Chicago Saturday afternoon. The Washington U. women posted a 179-120 victory, while the Washington U. men edged Chicago 154-145.

Freshmen Niamh O’Grady and Nicole Zanolli each won two events for the Washington U. women. O’Grady clocked a season-best time of 58.03 to win the 100 butterfly, and led a first- through third-place sweep for the Bears in the 100 freestyle. She won the event with a time of 53.73, while sophomore MariMac Collins (54.35) and freshman Fiona Hon (54.74) finished second and third, respectively. Zanolli just missed a B-cut in the 400 IM, winning in a season-best time of 4:36.92. She added a first-place finish in the 1,000 free in 10:35.42.

Sophomore Justin Morrell (Finance & Economics) won a pair of individual events for the Washington U. men, winning the 50 free in 21.55 and the 100 free in a season-best time of 46.64. Freshman Ross Brown (International Business) placed second in the 100 free with a season-best time of 47.76. Morrell also teamed with junior Reed Dalton, Brown and junior Kaisen Yao to win the 200-free relay in a season-best time of 1:24.20, while the 200-medley relay team of Yao, sophomore Michael Lagieski, Dalton and Morrell clocked a winning time of 1:33.90.

Dalton added a first-place finish for the Washington U. men in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.12, and Lagieski won the 100 breaststroke in 57.93. Sophomore Reese Frerichs won the 200 breaststroke in a season-best time of 2:08.34, while Lagieski (2:08.64) and sophomore Matt Liu (2:09.73) (Olin, undeclared) also posted season-bests to finish third and fourth, respectively. Sophomore Andrew Ellison and freshman Wending Zhu finished first and second in the 500 free with times of 4:45.13 and 4:50.99, respectively. Senior Zane Turpin (9:46.48) (Economics & Strategy) and Zhu (10:03.01) both posted season-best times to finish first and second, respectively, in the 1,000 free.

Hon led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Washington U. women in the 50 free. She clocked a season-best time of 24.76 to finish first, while Collins (25.19) and sophomore Claire Savage  (International Business)(25.30) finished second and third, respectively. Collins also won an individual event for the Bears, taking first in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:55.97. Junior Grace Counts also clocked a season-best time to finish second in 1:57.33. Junior Kristalyn McAfee helped the Washington U. women sweep the freestyle events, winning the 500 free in a season-best time of 5:11.87, while Counts finished third in a season-best 5:16.85.

Sophomore Emily Ramos won the women’s three-meter diving for Washington U. with a score of 218.10. Junior Amanda Stadermann accounted for Washington U.’s other individual event victory, finishing first in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:09.00. The Bears finished the meet with a win in the 200-free relay. The team of Hon, Savage, sophomore Lauren Carlos (Marketing, Film & Media Studies) and Collins clocked a winning time of 1:38.86.

The men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams return to action Nov. 22 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational in Bloomington, Ill.

The No. 17 ranked Wash U. men’s basketball team will host No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan University in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday, March 9, at the WU Field House in St. Louis. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Washington University (21-5) advanced to the second round for the 15th time as an NCAA Division III member with a 70-61 victory over Spalding University Saturday at home. The Bears are making their 17th NCAA appearance as an NCAA Division III school and 20th overall, and sport a 31-14 (.689) all-time postseason record in Division III play.

Washington U. has made three Final Four appearances in school history, and captured back-to-back national championships in 2008 and 2009.

Illinois Wesleyan (22-5) posted an 80-71 win over Transylvania University in the NCAA first round Saturday in Bloomington, Ill. The Titans are making their fourth-straight and 22nd overall NCAA Tournament appearance and have a 48-21 (.696) record in tournament play. Illinois Wesleyan has made five Final Four appearances in school history – a national championship in 1997, third-place finishes in 1996, 2001 and 2006, and a semifinal appearance in 2012.

Washington U. and Illinois Wesleyan met once in the 2012-13 season – a 67-57 victory by Washington U. Dec. 1 in the championship game of the 29th Annual Lopata Classic. The two teams have met four previous times in the NCAA Tournament -1995, 1996, 2003, and 2010 – with Illinois Wesleyan winning all four matchups. The Titans have also won both meetings at the WU Field House in the NCAA Tournament – 85-73 in the NCAA Second Round in 2003 and 75-70 in the NCAA Second Round in 2010.

The box office will open at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. Ticket prices are $3 for students with an ID and $6 for adults. Washington University undergraduate students with an ID will be admitted free courtesy of Student Union. Tickets will not be sold prior to the box office opening.

Louisville, Ky., February 27, 2013 – For her outstanding efforts both at the plate and in the circle this past weekend, Washington University in St. Louis freshman pitcher/infielder Brooke Hofer has been selected as the Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III National Player of the Week, as announced Wednesday by the Association.

Hofer hit .643 (9-for-14) with six RBIs and recorded a multi-hit game in all four wins for Washington University at the Rhodes College Lynx Classic in Memphis. She went a combined 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI in two wins Saturday, and bettered her performance the following day.

Hofer went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a career-high four RBIs in a 13-7 win against Rhodes, and followed with a 3-for-3 performance and was on base four times in a 7-2 win over Transylvania University Sunday.

Hofer, the reigning University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week, also posted a 1-0 record with a 2.42 earned run average on the mound in 8 2/3 innings pitched. She struck out two and did not allow a hit in two innings in relief against Transylvania Saturday, and allowed six hits and three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings pitched against Rhodes Sunday.

Washington University is off to a 4-0 start for the second-straight year and eighth time in school history. The Bears return to action with four games at the Hendrix College Warrior Spring Fling Saturday-Sunday, March 2-3, in Conway, Ark. Washington U. takes on the host Hendrix Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. contest with Austin College.
