The Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), a leading professional society in the field of production and operations management, has selected Dr. Panos Kouvelis to receive the POMS Fellow Award of 2016.  Kouvelis, Emerson Distinguished Professor of Operations and Manufacturing Management and Director of the Boeing Center for Technology, Information and Manufacturing at Washington University’s Olin Business School, was given the news by the chair of the selection committee earlier this week.  Considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the operations management community, the POMS Fellow Award is given as a recognition of lifetime achievement to individuals who have made exceptional intellectual contributions through research and teaching.

BCTIM - PK3

Kouvelis

“Although loyal service to the Society, in administrative, elected, or editorial assignments, is not by itself a sufficient qualification for this award, it can strengthen the case of a member who has also become a thought-leader in our field. To be eligible a candidate must have demonstrated commitment to furthering the objectives of POMS (as evidenced by such indicators as membership in the Society, and active participation in POMS Colleges and meetings).”   ~  POMS website

Kouvelis will be welcomed into this highly-esteemed group at the official ceremony, which will be held at the POMS annual conference in Orlando, Florida on May 8.  The Olin community is very thankful for Kouvelis’ contributions to research and teaching, and congratulates him on this wonderful accomplishment!

A research paper by professors Daniel Elfenbein, Barton Hamilton, and Todd Zenger* has been selected as the winner of the INFORMS Technology Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship Section (TIMES) Best Paper Award for best innovation and entrepreneurship paper published in 2010 in INFORMS journals.

The paper is,”The small firm effect and the entrepreneurial spawning of scientists andengineers,” published in Management Science, Vol. 56, No. 4, pp. 659-681.

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is the largest society in the world for professionals in the field of operations research (O.R.), management science, and analytics.

This is the first year of the INFORMS Technology, Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship best paper competition. The INFORMS TIMES section leadership chose a system in which the best papers for the annual competition would be narrowed down for the competition to the top-six papers by citation from five years earlier (this year 2010). The best paper and a runner-up were then selected by a panel of senior leaders in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

This year, after narrowing down the papers to those with top citations, James Utterback, Arnoud De Meyer, Dundar Kocaoglu, Nitin Joelker and Juliana Hsuan served as judges on the best paper selection panel.

*Todd Zenger is a former faculty member at Olin; Dan Elfenbein is a professor of Organization and Strategy at Olin; and Bart Hamilton is the Robert Brookings Smith Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at Olin.
