The annual auction hosted by Olin Women in Business (OWIB) was a huge success this past January, and proved to be one of the unmissable events of the year. Watching classmates attempt to outbid each other in the live auction is priceless entertainment, and this year was no exception.

One item in particular, a dinner for 18 hosted by Greg Hutchings of the Weston Career Center and adjunct professor, led to a heated round of bidding between a second-year MBA still flush from a successful summer internship and a band of first-years pooling their money. The first-years won out, and I was lucky enough to join that group for an evening at Greg’s beautiful condominium in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis.

It’s no wonder Greg’s auction dinner has become somewhat legendary, due in no small part to Greg’s impeccable taste. Dinner kicked off with champagne and fresh scallops, harvested and sent via airmail by Greg’s friends in Nantucket. An incredible dinner of beef
tenderloin followed, paired with a delicious red wine from Juan Gil winery, which everyone enjoyed so much that it’s become a staple at MBA get-togethers. But nothing could top the dessert of chocolate pie from Sugaree Baking Co. I won’t hesitate to say this was by far the most delicious pie I’ve ever had in my life, and I am no stranger to pie.

We finished off the night with a nightcap at Gamlin Whiskey House down the street, and a toast to Greg for hosting a dinner that far outshone anything we could have expected. The class of 2018 will have stiff competition from me in the bidding for this dinner at next year’s auction.

Olin Women in Business and the Weston Career Center are excited to welcome Julie Praiss from Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS)

Julie is currently the Vice President of Commodities & Services Contracting team for the Supplier Management function within BDS. Julie has 30 years of experience in the aerospace industry, with experience at Boeing, Monsanto, and Ford. She is a fellow Olin MBA, and also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. Speaker series featuring Dr. Amy Kilbourne on Wednesday, April 6th

Dr. Amy Kilbourne is visiting Washington University on April 6 as part of the Institute for Public Health’s Women Leaders in Public Health Lecture Series. Dr. Kilbourne’s focus is on interventions designed to improve mental health, and she’s a leading expert in implementation science and quality improvement.

Her talk is titled “Leading 360: Giving it All and Giving Back in a Changing World.” She will focus on her career path and offer advice and details about being a women in leadership in the realm of healthcare and health research.

The talk will take place on Wednesday, April 6th in Hillman Hall room 120 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. More information can be found here.

I attended a lunch at the Knight Center private dining room on Thursday, April 23 with Marianne Schnall, a leading commentator and journalist focused on women’s issues nationwide and author of What Will It Take to Make a Woman President? Conversations about Women, Leadership and Power.

In town to speak at the Women’s Leadership Forum graduation that evening, Schnall shared details of her professional journey as a writer, which began with a stint as an assistant to a literary agent and progressed to celebrity interviews on the red carpet before Schnall realized her passion for writing about women’s issues. Schnall said, “I had the best job ever. Everyone was telling me this, so I thought it must be true. And then I realized that it wasn’t.”

Schnall has written widely about women in leadership, and interviewed countless people in the public eye on the topic. Learn more about Schnall and her work at her website: marianneschnall.com.

Additionally, this lunch provided the first opportunity for Executive MBA and Professional MBA students to participate in an Olin Women in Business (OWIB) event. OWIB is an organization run by full-time MBA students.

The 2015 Olin Women in Business Charity Auction in support of The Scholarship Foundation hit a homerun again this year. While many excellent events were auctioned off by faculty members, those of us at Greg Hutchings’ gourmet dinner party are certain we got the best deal.

Greg is the Assistant Dean and Director of Specialized Masters Programs, but a true member of the whole Olin community. This past Friday February 13th, he welcomed 17 students across the PMBA, MBA, JD/MBA, and Architecture/MBA programs into his home for fine dining, wine pairings, and most of all, a lot of fun.

I was very excited to bid on this event, having lost out in the auction the year prior. In fact, during my candidate visit to Olin two years ago I met with another military veteran escorting me on the program visit who raved about having just taken part in Greg’s famous scholarship dinner. Suffice it to say, the meal and the party lived up to its billing.

In addition to an excellent three course meal with terrific wine pairings, Greg proved a tremendous host showing us the nuanced and unique facets of his home and its layout.  With such a wide variety of students in attendance, many of whom are in their final semester and preparing for life after Olin, it was a nice opportunity to get several of us together and connect before the spring semester rolls to an end.

Moreover, it provided many of us a great example of what hosting an intimate dinner should truly look like.  Even though we had 17 student attendees plus our host, the entire experience was familial and, again, quite fun.

For those who are not members of the Olin community, I believe this dinner provides yet another example of a top caliber business school finding a way to make each of its individual students feel welcome and at home. And of course, the funds raised in celebrating the night went to benefit a great cause. Dinner this past Friday will surely be remembered by all in attendance as they begin looking at post-graduation plans, with the only regret being they didn’t bid higher to take part last year too!
